Below-ground swimming Pools

Below-ground swimming pools are traditional swimming pools that are excavated into the ground and have the top walls of the pool at the same level as the surrounding ground level, or finished patio or paved area.

Below-ground, or in-ground, swimming pools are expensive to construct because they require a high level of building work. They also need a good sized plot of land with access for excavators and vehicles to remove the extracted material.

These submerged pools can have tiled bases and walls, or utilize modern vinyl liners. They also need pumps and filters and many (in cooler climates) require some form of heater to maintain an acceptable bathing temperature. Many of these heaters are powered by solar power.

In-ground, or below-ground, swimming pools will always require planning permissions as they are considered to be permanent structures. For this reason, deciding to build an in-ground swimming pool is an endeavour that requires both physical and legal planning and organization. It is usual to have a contractor and sometimes a project manager overseeing the building work.

Building this kind of pool will always cause a level of short term disruption, so this should also be considered and included in with other considerations.

Ultimately, and in-ground swimming pool is superior to its above ground counterparts, but it cannot be removed or repaired so easily.
